The biggest Christmas Market in Munich is located at Marienplatz, Munich’s main town square, where the old and new town halls stand. Marienplatz mean “St. Mary or Our Lady’s Square” and has been the town square since 1158.
Every year more than 3 million tourists and locals visit the Christmas market who’s tradition reaches back to around the 14th century. They go there to enjoy mulled wine, gingerbread, and other traditional seasonal dishes as well as do a bit of shopping. The market covers 20.000 square meters full of stalls which sell craft art, Christmas decorations, and handmade clothes out of the best materials.
The market’s impressive Christmas tree is visible from far away, it’s about 26 meters high and decorated with 3 thousand lights. Each year’s tree is an honorable donation from a bavarian comune.
The Marienplatz Christmas market also hosts the largest crib market in Germany, where you can find traditional hand carved figures to decorate your crib at home.
The many food stalls cater for all diets. Amongst all the traditional delicacies that the stalls offer they also serve vegan Kletzenbrot (fruitcake) and gluten free Elisenlebkuchen (gingerbread).
Families are well catered for with a number of activities for children. For example the Himmelswerkstatt (children’s workshop) where kids can tinker, bake and play. St. Nicolaus and Krampus also stop by every day at the market, St. Nicolaus gives the good children presents and Krampus punishes the naughty one’s!
Children can even send their letters directly to Santa Claus at the “Christkindlpostamt” (Christmas post office), every letter will be answered.
If you visit the market in a large group there is the opportunity to book a guided tour. The market is located in the main shopping area, so if you have been shopping and have a lot of bags to carry, you can store them at the market’s luggage office.
